OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, August 2, 2018 7-9 p.m.
Cindy Materi (nee Homenuke) grew up in Smithers and has lived in various northern communities including Stewart, Quick, Tumbler Ridge, BC and Pine Point, NWT. She earned a BEd. and currently lives with her husband, Ron, in Kitwanga, where she works as an educational assistant. Cindy has always been involved in a variety of creative pursuits and her paintings have been exhibited in Smtihers, Terrace, Prince George and Yellowknife.
Cindy's creativity is inspired by light, colour and patterns in nature. Her paintings capture light and its effect on the landscape.
Born in Belfast, N. Ireland, Mairead has always been passionately interested in drawing and painting. At Teachers’ College, she specialized in Art and Crafts and taught Art at an inner city High School, in Belfast. In 1971, she volunteered for a two-year stint at an independent elementary school in Smithers she met and married her husband Nick. From that point on she has made BC her home. Shortly after retiring from teaching she and her husband moved to the Okanagan to be near family.
Mairead is particularly taken by the effect of strong light contrast in a scene, whether it be landscape or floral. Over the years, she has been influenced by the work of the French Impressionists, and the Group of Seven, especially the early work of Lawrence Harris. Landscape remains her favorite subject and photos from the Smithers area and hikes with the Okanagan Naturalists provide her with much subject matter. "I am filled with wonder at the beauty and never ending variety of the Okanagan landscape".
