The Smithers Art Gallery in conjunction with the BC Arts Council is please to announce that we are embarking on an Artist Residency for 2025. Applications are now being accepted.

Mission:
The SGA Artist Residency is a two-week, paid opportunity designed to support underrepresented artists or art forms (BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and other marginalized groups). The program guarantees the option of an exhibition at the Smithers Art Gallery within two years.

Goals:

  • Increase access to paid residencies and exhibition opportunities for marginalized artists.

  • Establish a recurring residency and exhibition program in rural Smithers, BC.

 

Residency Structure:

  • Duration: 2 weeks, starting Spring/Summer 2025 (dates set in consultation with the artist).

  • Compensation: $193/day ($2,660 total)

  • Support: Accommodations, studio space, and assistance organizing a community engagement activity (e.g., workshop or demo).

  • Exhibition: Optional exhibition at the Smithers Art Gallery within 2 years. CARFAC fees apply ($650 for full gallery, reduced for partial space).

  • Family Support: $700 stipend available if a caregiver is needed for accompanying dependents.

  • Expectations: Minimum of 6 hours/day in the studio, 6 days/week, plus at least one public engagement activity.

  • Eligibility: Open to artists at any career stage. One artist hosted at a time.
