The Smithers Art Gallery has been in operation for over 45 years and continues to grow and expand its role in the community through public art exhibitions, art education for children and adults, special events, and a retail space for artists and artisans.

Camp Counsellor Assistant - Summer

Dates of Employment: July and August for 6-8 weeks - possible to have some Saturday shifts in May/June
Hours of Work: Tuesday–Saturday 35 hours/week

Remuneration starting at $18.50/hour

Applicants must be a student between the ages of 16 and 30, a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada. Confirmation of student status may be required by funders. High school students eligible to apply.

Camp Counsellor Assistant: Position

​

The Smithers Art Gallery is a non profit organization that runs twelve, 4 day long summer camps over the summer for multi-age groups (6-8, 9-12). We are seeking to hire under-respresented youth including Indigenous or other racialized youth, disabled and or LGBTQ+ youth as camp councellors/assistants. We have been successful in hiring from all of these under-represented youth in the past. We are dedicated to finding education and gallery learning opportunities and experience for youth in their home communities.

 

Councellors will be responsible for assisting Camp Leaders provide age appropriate visual arts camps for our remote community. These camps will provide art education linked with interest areas such as nature, science and art history. Youth will gain meaningful work experience in planning and developing activities, working with others and responding to challenging situations in a classroom setting within their home community. Youth will receive one on one mentoring with our Gallery Manager who has worked in education programming and our Education Program Coordinator daily during prior to camp start up and weekly once camps begin. Councellors will rotate each week of camp and will work in the gallery on alternate weeks and have the opportunity to develop the special events activities. Details of the position and skills developed are listed below.

 

Summer Art Camps:

  • assist leaders of art camps - Adaptability; Collaboration; Communication; Problem Solving; Technical

  • classroom set-up and take-down for each art camp - Technical Skills

  • maintain inventory and purchasing new supplies within budget - Numeracy; Digital Skills

  • take photos and videos during camps for promotional purposes - Creativity and Innovation; Digital Skills; Technical

  • work with program coordinator to develop social media posts - Creativity and Innovation; Digital Skills

 

Summer Events and Festival Programming:

  • devise family activities & create a demonstration models for all holidays, events and festivals in the community of Smithers including Smithers Pride, Victoria Day, National Indigenous People’s Day, Canada Day, the Midsummer Music Festival, Kispiox Music Festival, Fall Fair & Parade and the Smithers Multicultural Festival - Creativity and Innovation; Technical; Digital Skills

  • maintain inventory of art and craft supplies and materials - Numeracy & Digital Skills

  • maintain accurate records and monitoring project budget - Numeracy & Digital Sills

  • set-up and take-down for each activity - Technical

  • record statistics

 

General duties:

  • staff the gallery and liaise with the public - Communication

  • record visitor numbers and other data - Numeracy

  • general cleaning and maintenance - Technical

  • artisan shop sales and merchandising - Digital; Creativity; Collaboration; Problem solving; Relationship Building with artists

  • Exhibition Set-up/Sales/Openings - Gallery specific skills that cannot be learned in other settings - how to set up an exhibition and hang a show; liaising with artists; specific art wrapping techniques for mailouts; “crate-ing” art for shipping
